we’re bringing it back to our old school sunday editions because i needed a couple extra days to send y’all stuff i was really excited about <3
things i’m listening to (while reading // online shopping below)
we’re getting a new bon iver ep in 25 days. pretend to be above it as much as you want, but when skinny love comes on, i know it takes us all back to those tumblr days.
in the meantime, we’ve gotten S P E Y S I D E, a single from the ep. here’s a dive to who worked on the single:
justin vernon (front man of bon iver + writer) : justin’s other projects include….volcano choir, big red machine, the shouting matches, and gayngs. justin is also the cofounder (alongside the national’s aaron dessner) of eaux claires music festival (here’s a reddit thread if anyone wants to weigh in on if it’s happening in 2024).
bj burton (writer): songwriter, producer, engineer and mixer. some songs you might love, but not know he was part of the magic behind them: james blake’s the colour in anything, the japanese house’s good at falling, miley cyrus’ the most, taylor swift’s closure, the staves’ if i was….stopping myself from continuing before this letter is too long, but you get it.
ryan olson (writer): olson (from eau claire, wisconsin) is also a founding member of gayngs (also poliça and marijuana deathsquads). he founded artist-run label, totally gross national project and the roster has included lizzo, velvet negroni, leisure birds, moonstone continuum (great band names in here.).
jim-e stack (producer): stack first became known for making “driving yet melancholic experimental club music” (too on the nose for up my alley). he has songs with perfume genius, with bon iver, and with charli xcx. he’s worked on songs we’re obsessed with: want you back by haim (keyboard), caroline polachek’s i give up (writing / production) and welcome to my island (writing / production), joji’s your man (writing / production), dominic fike’s sunburn (a lot). again, could keep going, but will stop myself here.
things i’m reading:
you’ve heard me say it at least three times here how i’m not patiently awaiting sally rooney’s new book, “intermezzo”. so while i wait for it to show up at my doorstep, i’m reading about it…
are you cool enough for the latest sally rooney? i hope so? a look at what happens when a book becomes a status symbol (think “the guest” last summer…no, i’m not looking at you all-the-guys-pretending-to-read-sapiens-or-bell-hooks). - esquire
the sally rooney effect. after the hype of “normal people” and “beautiful world where are you”, “intermezzo” has been deemed rooney’s “most ambitious work yet”. - airmail
sally rooney thinks career growth is overrated. not to steer you away from her sharing that she’s never read the autobiography of any writers and that she doesn’t care about her career, but….would love to get her and new nike ceo elliott hill (who’s been with the company for 30 years). - ny times
things in my cart:
hear me out. products with sphere lids keep finding their way into my life…i’m not mad, they’re great products. but it’s getting weird how many are filling my toiletries drawer?
bread hair gloss smells like grape (not hate please) and i’m so disillusioned by the great scent that it makes it an automatic 11/10 for me.
also from bread: the brat-green scalp serum that caught my attention this summer (for obvious reasons).
the ghia apéritif bottle! genius.
i’m loudly obsessed with maison millais’ “funny little things whispered at very important dinner parties” perfume, but the brand’s new “citiette” has become a quick favorite.
harry styles’ nail polish. (that’s all)
i brought this herbar face nectar back with me from france and am now sold on keeping it in the rotation.
more mysterious? this french plum face oil from kindred black.
queen chloe sevigny’s régime des fleurs “little flower” perfume.
these geometric hair ties are sphere-lid-adjacent, but they give similar enough vibes to include here because i love them.
amuse hand cream. people are obsessed with this korean hand cream and i’ll admit the colors (brat green again, sorry, they do have other combos) drew me in.
things to make
sourdough bread has been more appealing to me than ever before in the past few weeks (this is a bold statement because i love sourdough bread) so….
toast with jams and butters spread like this to make myself feel like i did something fancy.
there are few things i love more than a tuna sandwich. specifically a tuna melt as i try to convince myself it’s feeling like fall in los angeles.
soups. dips. anything that will let my sourdough act as the excellent purveyor, and pretty much sponge, that it is.
things to *swoon* over: bluuuueeee everywhere
