it's personal: choreographer & designer andrew winghart
what andrew is talking about that isn't the weather
welcome back to “it’s personal” — where we’ll get personal with some of my favorite people to hear what they’re talking about that isn’t the weather.
it’s personal with…choreographer, director and designer of 12twelve, andrew winghart
things andrew is listening to…
earth - sault — "valley of the ocean" gets near-daily play from me. there’s something magnetic about the soul running through this record—quietly powerful and always moving.
at the beach, in every life - gigi perez — feels nostalgic but fresh, like you’re back in ‘500 days of summer' or ‘crazy, stupid, love’. and that voice….. nothing, absolutely takes the spot for my personal highlight but it’s tough to choose.
seek treatment podcast — my go-to for a weekly laugh. low stakes, unhinged bits, and strangely comforting in its chaos.
birdsong — i live in the forest, and all day the birds sing. it’s uniquely settling and I find it most moving in the early hours of the morning.
things andrew is reading…
healing fiction, james hillman — hillman suggests that life is story—rich in metaphor, always unfolding. it’s dense in parts, but lingers in the best way. a slow burn that keeps returning to me.
I ching hexagram 16, yu / enthusiasm: “when, at the beginning of summer, thunder — electrical energy — comes rushing forth from the earth again, and the first thunderstorm refreshes nature, a prolonged state of tension is resolved. joy and relief make themselves felt. so too, music has power to ease tension within the heart and to loosen the grip of obscure emotions. the enthusiasm of the heart expresses itself involuntarily in a burst of song, in dance and rhythmic movement of the body. from immemorial times the inspiring effect of the invisible sound that moves all hearts, and draws them together, has mystified mankind.” — an all time favorite excerpt of mine, speaks to my soul.
the creative habit, twyla tharp — a yearly re-read. twyla offers practical tools for building creative discipline, and her insights extend far beyond the dance studio. (see also rick rubin’s the creative act)
the song of achilles, madeline miller — a beautifully told reimagining of the Iliad—mythology, romance, heartbreak. i was all in.
oliver bryne, elements of euclid — a stunning collision of ancient geometry and art. i don’t claim to fully grasp the math, but the colors and illustrations alone are worth the flip-through.
things in andrew’s cart…
prada sport 2000s jacket — forever obsessed with 90s/00s prada sport. nobody’s done tech-wear better.
sacai hoodie — i love pretty much everything sacai makes. one of these hoodies is high on the dream list.
helmut lang - border carpenter pant — a refined take on the carpenter pant with ladder-stitch detailing i can’t stop thinking about.
12twelve track pants — while we don’t make any menswear yet, someday i need to make a men’s version of these pants in this exact fabric. they really are the ultimate track pant.
things andrew is making…
dance films — a few stills from some of my previous film work. these are passion projects i self fund / direct / product & choreograph.
ink drawings — when i’m in a creative rut i like to sit down pen and paper for a few days and just go - i find it helps me let go of any creative blocks i am holding on to.
new styles for 12twelve — i really love the development phase of apparel design and have some new styles going into production for the fall that i can’t wait to get out there!
